Originally published during the golden age of parlor games (1880-1910), Merry Matches is an early version of Old Maid. The game consists of 31 beautifully illustrated cards depicting characters paired from nursery rhymes, fairy tales and other children's literature. Some are easily recognizable such as Cinderella, Simple Simon, Little Red Riding Hood, Old Mother Hubbard, Father Christmas and Little Bo-Peep. While the more obscure characters include Blue Beard, Fatima, Goodie Two Shoes, Lucy Locket and Alice Lee.

The object of the game is to make as many pairs as possible. The player who retains the unmatchable Mistress Mary at the end of the game is penalized.
